Starting Installation Process:

First thing you want to do is make sure that you have the settings in your system BIOS set to boot from CD. To do that, when you boot your computer up, press either the Delete, F1, or F12 key. Which key it is depends on the model of your computer. Once that is done, insert the CD into the CD Drive Bay and restart the computer. If everything is done right, a small line of text will pop up saying "Press Any Key To Boot From CD." After that, the setup will start loading the files needed to install the Operating System.

Partitioning and Disk Formatting:

After the setup process has begun, you will see a blue screen that says push Enter to continue Windows XP setup, push R to start the Recovery console, and a button to push that exits the installer. Push Enter to continue, and if you get a screen asking if one of the following Windows Installations is corrupted, just bypass that screen. When you get to the screen that lets you choose which hard disk to install the operating system on, you will have the option to install the Operating System on to the hard drive, or you can make partitions to allow for multiple operating systems to be installed.

Lets say for instance that you would like to have Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional installed on an 80 Gigabyte Hard Disk. You would select the hard drive and press the "C" button to create a partition. When doing this, you can select any size you want the partition to be. If you want the 2000 installation to be 20 GB, then you would enter 20000 in to the number box, then push enter. The partition for XP will already be there after you make the 2000 Partition so don't worry. Windows 2000 Professional Installation, is the same process as installing XP, so don't worry about that. But you do want to install Windows 2000 first, because there will be a boot order problem if you don't. Now after that is done, you will notice that the disk partitions are "raw," which means they are not formatted. To format a partition, select it by pushing enter, and it will give you the option of selecting from FAT, FAT32, and NTFS formats. You will want to go with the NTFS file system, because XP Performance is greatly improved using this file system. After that is complete, the Operating System install process will start.

Operating System Installation:

What the setup is going to do now, is install files to the Windows Setup folder, after that is done, it will restart the computer and the process will continue. If you get the "Press Any Key To Boot From CD" thing again, do not touch anything, as it will automatically go to the install screen.

The setup is now going to install files and prepare for the installation, so just sit tight and wait until the next screen comes up. The screen that will come up is the Regional settings for things such as time, language, and etc. After you set that up, you will be asked to enter your product key for the installation of Windows XP.

The following screens will ask you to enter some networking information, as well as a password for the Administrator account. The account that the setup refers to is the one you use for safe mode. After your all done with the screens, the setup will continue to install things such as the mouse and keyboard drivers, networking drivers, Start Menu items, and things like that. Once it is done and your computer restarts, your Windows XP Installation is complete!

Beginning To Use Windows XP:

Depending on whether you have OEM Software or not, a certain screen will come up. You'll have the option to activate Windows XP before you start using the OS, or you will have the option to create User Accounts for whoever will be using the computer. Whatever screen comes up, follow the directions accordingly. Now once you are at your desktop and connected to the Internet, you will want to install security software first thing before you actually start using the computer.

Security Software Installation:

The first program you want to install, is Avast! Antivrus, and you can find it by going to www.download.com (http://www.download.com) and typing the name of the program in the site search box, and then click which version you want to download.

The next program you will want to install, is SpyBot-Search & Destroy, which is a spyware removal program. It can be found by doing the same process as looking for Avast! Antivirus.

The next, and most important thing to download, is Windows XP Service Pack 3. It can be found by going to the Microsoft website, or by using a search engine to find the download file. This service pack contains all software and fixes from Windows XP Service Packs 1 & 2. Service Pack 3 will install with Windows Firewall, and other software vital to the security of your computer. After you install all these programs (they are all free by the way), your ready to start using Windows XP! Have fun!
